Jaime discovers on vacation in the Bahamas her artificial bionic skin cannot suntan with exposure to sunlight. It is also revealed in Part 2 of "Doomsday Is Tomorrow" that Jaime's artificial limbs don't perspire like normal human skin. After Jaime recovers from her operation, Steve tries to break his agreement with Oscar that she will serve as an agent for OSI. Jaime agrees to undertake a mission for Oscar despite Steve's concerns. During the mission her bionics malfunction, and she experiences severe and crippling headaches.
Wells determines that Jaime's body is rejecting her bionic implants and a massive cerebral clot is causing her headaches and malfunctions. Soon after, she goes berserk and forces her way out of the hospital. Steve pursues and catches her, and she collapses in his arms. Soon after, Jaime dies on the operating table when her body shuts down.
The character was so popular that ABC asked the writers to find a way to bring her back. In the first episode of the next season, it is revealed that Jaime had not died after all, but Steve was not told.
He soon discovers the truth when he is hospitalized after suffering severe damage to his bionic legs; he sees Jaime before slipping into a coma. As Steve later learns, Wells' assistant, Dr. Michael Marchetti, had urged Rudy now played by Martin E. Brooks to try his newly developed cryogenic techniques to keep Jaime in suspended animation until the cerebral clot could be safely removed, after which she was successfully revived. A side effect of the procedure causes Jaime to develop retrograde amnesia, preventing her from recalling previous events including her relationship with Steve.

At last, Helen and Jim gently reveal to Jaime that she and Steve were much closer than she remembers. Jaime flips the page to see the Ausommers newspaper announcement of her engagement to Steve. Back after these lightening strikes. After Jaime bionic-unloads her generic Ojai Used Appliance Store stove from Jim's pickup truck, she gets her very first phone call!
He also happens to have someone in his office who would like to say hi. Photos arranged here in a classic Pillow Talk split screen for our viewing pleasure. But their first conversation is a bit awkward—not anything fun like Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Steve seems kinda cranky today.
The Bionic Book
Why is my mood ring suddenly turning gray? Surely his indifference here means he's just keeping his guard up so he doesn't get hurt again? Or maybe it was Bubba, the key grip, who was feeding him Jaime's lines in a husky voice during the filming of this scene that made it difficult for him to mirror any affection.
Well, whatever is darkening your brow Colonel Austin, snap out of it!! I spent a LOT of time updating your frickin' scrapbook to get her to like you again. Yeah mister, you better.
The Bionic Woman
And look, she's arriving in a sporty blue Datsun Z! Her character coolness just keeps getting better as this episode unfolds. She is meeting some Lieutenant Colonel guy at the base school.
He's sorta handsome and tries to become her new Not! Because you know, she is maybe kinda dating that scrapbook guy.
He offers her the job of teaching an incorrigible class comprised of "service brats. This looks like the boss expecting favors for the job hire. But I love how Jaime reacts to him trying to casually put his arm around her when he escorts her through a door. She gave his arm a dirty look behind his back. That evening, Helen stops by Jaime's apartment to congratulate her on the new job.
And look, she brought along another scrapbook with more photos for Jaime to look at! The revised, hard-sell presentation, after picking up some new pointers from us. But Jaime has to look at it later because she's busy cramming for her first day of school tomorrow.
They talk a little more about lost memories of Steve and Helen says some really beautiful stuff about almost having Jaime for a daughter-in-law once. When Jaime can't locate her can opener in the moving boxes, she uses her bionic fingernail to open her can of tuna.
It's our very first, wow-that-doesn't-look-like-aluminum-foil-at-all bionic can opening stunt. Helen is amazed to watch her in action, and asks Jaime if she has an extra set of nails for her, too. Jaime promises to ask Rudy to check the parts department. And Part Three - Steve Austin - veteran man of adventure, out to save the world and the girl.
It gets a bit technical in places - but then again, this is a man with bionics in three of his four limbs.

I will confess - while reading about certain parts, I made the sound effect, just so it seemed right. Would I recommend this book to other people - only if they are into the show.

I have been wanting to read this book for more than forty years, when I noticed it mentioned in the closing credits of The Six Million Dollar Man, my favourite TV show of the time. Was it worth the wait? As a fan of the TV show I enjoyed lots of the extra bionic features Steve Austin has, which include webbed feet that come out of his regular feet, a hidden microphone in his leg that can be pulled out to make recordings, and poison darts that fire through a fake finger.

All this is wonderfully bonkers but not quite so bonkers as the submarines disguised as porpoises - that would certainly have appealed to my younger self. Also the last page is bionic cheese.
